Sound waves you can see as well as experience!
This extra-long version of the familiar and always popular spring toy provides an excellent demonstration for modeling longitudinal and transverse waves. In a transverse wave, the particle displacement is perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation. The particles do not move along with the wave; they simply oscillate up and down about their individual equilibrium positions as the wave passes by.
In physics, sound is a vibration that typically propagates as an audible wave of pressure, through a transmission medium such as a gas, liquid or solid. The Super Springy can also be used to demonstrate compression waves and teach the relationship between wavelength and frequency.
