Intro to Solid Body Rotation
Purpose
This qualitative lab has students rearrange steel spheres to intuitively feel for rotational inertia.
Discussion
Students will need to be observant and thoughtful as they change the quantity and location of steel spheres. By twisting and shaking separate disks they will begin to understand the relationships between the "resistance to being spun," the amount of mass, and the distance of the mass from the axis of rotation.
