This visually impactful, quantitative demonstration shows how pressure increases as depth within a liquid increases. A hollow drum with a rubber membrane is connected by tubing to a manometer allowing students to observe that the change in depth of the drum correlates directly to readings observed on the manometer.

Additional Details

This engaging kit allows students to visualize and quantify the dynamic changes in pressure as an object descends deeper into a fluid. By immersing a hollow drum covered with a rubber membrane in water, students observe firsthand how the increased pressure on the membrane affects the fluid level within the connected manometer.

Pressure is important in determining buoyancy by creating pressure differences on submerged objects. Pressure differences result in an upward force, known as buoyancy, which counteracts the force of gravity and determines whether an object floats, sinks, or remains suspended in a fluid.

The Density Manometer is a great introduction to Archimedes' principle, which states that the buoyant force exerted on an object submerged in a fluid is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object. Pushing the drum deep into the column and releasing will highlight this principle to students. The water, being much more dense than a hollow drum, will apply significant buoyant force to the drum.
