Get up and move–through geologic time!
Students participate in a dynamic, hands-on exploration of the rock cycle through eight distinct stations, each representing a different type of rock or geological process. Utilizing a spinner to guide their movements, students experience the transformation of materials within the rock cycle.
Key Concepts:
- Rock Types: Sedimentary, Igneous, Metamorphic
- Rock Cycle: The continuous process of rock formation, transformation, and alteration through heat, pressure, and sediment deposition.
- Geological Processes: Understanding of current Earth processes and their historical continuity.
- Earth Materials & Natural Resources: The role of Earth materials in shaping the environment and providing resources.
Student Deliverables:
- Movement Analysis: Track and analyze the patterns of movement through the rock cycle stations.
- Geologic Time Calculation: Estimate and reflect on the time scale involved in the transitions between rock types.
- Conceptual Application: Generalize insights gained from the activity to understand Earth’s ongoing geological processes.
- Key Vocabulary Mastery: Demonstrate understanding and appropriate use of key terms, including igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary, magma, sediments, and the rock cycle.
